Details make the home. They are woven into every area of our home and often there to express what we love. A good designer understands their importance and spends time learning about their client’s lives and their passions. Details are found on what we hang on the wall, our favorite colors, and what things make us truly feel at home. Maybe your home has been missing something but you haven’t been able to quite figure out what that something is. Places like Pinterest offer a wide range of images that provide a spark for your imagination with the freedom to put your own little spin on it. That is the beauty of details, there is, for the most part, no hard and fast rule about when and where. They are meant to be sprinkled into your house transforming it into a home that feels just right. Let’s talk about some of our favorite details.
Hardware
When it comes to hardware, the kitchen is the first place we think of but it can be used throughout the home. Considered the finishing touch for a cabinet, hardware not only adds function but beauty too, a little way to express yourself in your space. Over the last few years companies have drawn inspiration from all over the world to create new and unique designs that give you more liberty to fully match your specific style. New choices for materials have been incorporated to create different patterns and textures such as leather and even shapes sparked by nature’s own flora and fauna. Hardware is also a simple way to refresh your space and add some extra character. Companies like Berenson, Schaub, and Top Knobs offer a full range of choices that will elevate your space no matter your style.
Backsplash
Spills and splatters will happen in the kitchen which is why a backsplash is a necessity since it makes cleaning up a breeze but there has been a shift for it to be more than just a functional element. Pattern, texture, and color are now part of the selection process as homeowners explore various ways they can turn that space between counter and cabinet into something of a work of art. A more colorful choice can transform the backsplash into a stunning contrast against a neutral cabinet palette or playing with various patterns to form an elegant focal point. Some have chosen to continue their countertop material all the way up giving their space an instant luxurious feel. Backsplash is no longer a mere protection barrier but a blank canvas to create something beautiful.
Lighting
Sometimes a new light or the addition of another can help give a lift to a space plus it is an essential part of design. Natural light is still the preferred main source of light but since it has a limited time span each day it is important to pair it with adequate artificial options. Choosing light fixtures that are fun as well as functional is another great way to blend another layer of detail to any area in the home. Living spaces benefit from several options such as wall sconces, track lighting, and floor lamps as it illuminates the space from multiple angles reducing eye strain. When shopping for new lighting be aware of size and space since a fixture too large can overpower the room and too small defeats the purpose. Here is a helpful guide. Draw inspiration from places like Pinterest before making your final selection.
Color
By far, color is one of the most fun elements in the design world and it permeates every area from kitchen cabinets to area rugs. The possibilities are abundant as are the materials. Artwork, pillows, accent walls, furniture, and floor coverings are just a few ways you can bring color into the home. Color impacts our mood and selecting certain colors for particular areas in the home can help it work better for everyone. A word of caution, color is a wonderful thing but it still needs balance, using too much can overpower the senses and break the harmony in a space. Details are a great way to add splashes of color in a room such as a sofa or a decor item. It also helps to pick a main color or design theme such as coastal or farmhouse to guide your selections.
Countertop
Though it might not be what comes to mind when you think about details since it tends to have a dominant presence in the space, countertops bring their own design to the area. The particular veining and patterns running through can draw the eye and add some visual interest to the project. Countertops are not limited to kitchens but are used in bathrooms, laundry rooms, and even closet islands. Quartz countertops are man made which allows for more color and pattern to be incorporated into the finished product giving you greater opportunity to find a unique detail for your home. When it comes to details, don’t overlook countertops.
Accent pieces
Details can take many shapes and forms including accent pieces like framed art, bookends, and vases. They add layer and dimension to any area of the home and let you add a personal touch as well. They can be paired together to create a unique collection or look but also be stand alone pieces like a piece of art hanging on a wall. Pillows and throw blankets also fall into this category plus they can come in handy for those evenings when you just want to relax and be cozy. The variety of texture and pattern also work in your favor since they can increase the diversity and depth to the area. Places like antique stores and flea markets can be great places to find unique items that really speak to you and make great conversation starters with family and friends. Don’t be afraid to try something new or even bold, it might be exactly what you needed.
Wallpaper
This has risen in popularity recently and for good reason, with the broad range of patterns available it can be a great way to add some details to your space. Designers have found multiple ways to incorporate it into their clients homes with results that are stunning. Some opt to use it as an accent wall while others enjoy using it with open back cabinets so it can shine through the back. Small powder rooms and even entryways have also benefited from the beauty and texture of wallpaper. Playing with different patterns is trending this year and wallpaper is a fun option.
Details make the home
Sometimes all a space needs is a few more details to completely transform it into something new. This doesn’t always mean a huge investment is needed but a little thinking outside the box. Places like Pinterest and designer blogs can be a great place to gather inspiration so don’t be afraid to venture out and explore options. Home is about you and needs to be a reflection of that to everyone who visits and details really do make the home.
