What are window treatments?

Post by Stacey Walker. Stacey mostly works behind the scenes for Greenbrook Design, managing day to day operations, marketing, sourcing product and keeping the showroom beautifully designed. Stacey also does interior design & home styling for a select number of clients. Find out more about Stacey here.

Windows, they are an essential element to the home but usually are the most overlooked. They have come a long way from what they used to be. Windows allow us to still enjoy nature, whether closed or open, and can also help the house be more energy efficient. They often provide the needed final touch to a room’s overall design and atmosphere as well. In this blog learn more about window treatments, what they are and the multiple benefits they can provide for you, your family, and your home.

What are window treatments?

In simple terms, the function of a window treatment is to provide a cover or modification of the window with the goal of enhancing the overall aesthetics of the room. They are intended to not only be functional but also add the final touch to a design that perfectly blends with the look and feel of the space. There are three categories of window treatments, each having their own function and value that they bring to the project.

  • Hard consists of materials such as wood and vinyl with products like shutters, blinds, and shades.
  • Soft is made from soft materials and can include swags, valances, and roman shades.
  • Combination is when both hard and soft are used and is often referred to as a layered window treatment. This option offers the best of both and can be used to create a visually stunning effect.

Before moving ahead with any selection, it is always best to first decide on the purpose of the room, this ensures that a plan is in place and no time is wasted. Browse our Graber gallery to see multiple examples of the different categories including combinations and find the inspiration you need.

Why window treatments?

While we don’t disagree that curtains are beautiful and have their place in the design world, window treatments are more than just pretty pieces of fabric or a functional home piece, they are both. They allow you to have those custom options like privacy and blocking out harmful UV rays without sacrificing beauty. Our design services focus on creating a space that is both functional and pleasing to the eye, and that includes the windows. There are so many choices offered for window treatments now than ever before which means you are guaranteed to find something that is an exact reflection of your style and will provide the custom elements you need to fit within your unique lifestyle.

What are the benefits of window treatments?

  • Customization – One of the biggest benefits of window treatments are the countless options available to you. Have a specific color or pattern in mind? You can get exactly what you need to match the design instead of having to rely on the limited options of most stores. Out of the box options work well for standard windows but what about bay windows, french, patio, or sliding doors, picture windows, or large windows? These can be more difficult to find in the average store, but with customization you can get the perfect fit for any size windows including width, length, and depth. Customization puts you back in control of your project and allows the design to be a reflection of you.
  • Quality workmanship – while custom window treatments may have a slightly higher price point than the average ready-made coverings offered by the box store, their quality will last longer saving you money in the long run. The finished product will also fit and look exactly as it is supposed to, meaning there are no shortcuts, or shabby workmanship.
  • Energy efficient – Windows can be responsible for up to 30% loss of your homes heat, which means more money out the window…literally! By having window treatments that are precise it allows you to control what is coming in or going out.
